Submarine pipeline engineering

Most submarine pipeline projects are divided into two parts. The first part covers the pipeline route largely based upon previous oceanographic studies, hydrographic charts and geophysical surveys. The second part involves the actual design of the pipeline taking into account all aspects such as stress analyses of the pipeline under operating conditions and during the laying operation.

Further analyses include pipeline and riser stability, internal and external pressures, and thermal and bending stresses.

All above engineering services can be offered by APS with in house expertise.

Project management services

The company has developed a structured overall project management control system which consists of a number of specialized sub-systems forming an integrated control package to be applied to any project, irrespective of its size or scope. The comprehensive system used enables the coordination of design and engineering effort with materials and equipment supply, fabrication, transportation and construction supervision on projects  of all sizes.

Progress Control

The progress of a project is monitored in a variety of ways, depending on the level of details required. Project schedules are developed using engineering, procurement and construction schedules as their basis.

Planning

The planning for any large project, commences with date of acquisition and analysis, and would include forecasts on cargo types, volumes and handling rates, shipping trends, marine traffic in the vicinity, and an evaluation of the effects on the site caused by meteorological, hydrographic and soils conditions. If insufficient information is available for determining the required capacity, a thorough conceptual planning study is usually carried out. Similarly, if insufficient physical data is available, a program of studies and site investigations would be established and executed.

After the project requirements and site characteristics have been comprehensively defined, a number of alternative configurations are developed for terminal and berth locations, tanker maneuvering areas, breakwater locations and if necessary cargo handling and storage systems.

The alternative layouts take into account downtime due to environment conditions, ship queuing and the various aspects of tanker maneuvering and anchoring in the terminal area. The constraints inherent in each alternative are evaluated and order-of-magnitude cost estimates are established for construction of the main terminal structures and for the consequential costs  to cargo distribution resulting from port constraints.

By comparing these costs, an optimum configuration is established. This optimum solution is also based on considerations of flexibility of usage and of the possibilities and costs for future expansion.

If during the development of layouts it becomes apparent that unusual solutions for structural design are needed as a result of hydrographic, marine or soils conditions, then designs would adequately address the results of such investigations and types of structures will be modified accordingly.
